Our People - Senior Management Team Profiles

MICHAEL BLAIN, General Manager

Michael joined mpas in June 2007, bringing with him 10 years of business and financial management experience across a number of service industry sectors both in Australia and Britain.

Immediately before joining mpas, Michael spent four years as a business adviser in the Highways Agency (UK), a government body that builds, operates and maintains the motorway and strategic road network in England.This role was a finance advisory role to business units in delivering infrastructure projects. Prior to that Michael spent three years contracting in the UK working for professional service organisations in finance and management roles. Before leaving Australia Michael was a financial controller for a family group of businesses that spanned the tourism and racing industries.

Michael holds Bachelors of Commerce & Laws and with these and his practical skill sets in financial and business management consulting he leads mpas in delivering value and growth from its existing assets – both people and property.

 

BRIAN WHITE, Operations Manager (SEQ)

Brian White is a professional land surveyor with more than 28 years of experience, including 24 years in office/field supervision and project management. Brian joined mpas in April 2011 and with qualifications in civil engineering, surveying and construction management, he is dedicated to the objectives of providing innovative, professional, and quality service to clients for a range of survey functions. He is responsible for the management and coordination of survey services on various projects including energy/resources, infrastructure, environment, master planned communities, community title subdivisions, alternative communities and large-scale control networks.

Brian is the Operations Manager of the South East Queensland region and is responsible for development, implementation and delivery of all survey projects with a focus on ‘special projects’.

Brian maintains a high level of competence in various survey disciplines, including cadastral, GNSS, topographic, control, mapping, and estate functions. He is committed to the ongoing use and development of an efficient data processing system, including innovative or customized solutions to survey data processing.

Brian manages projects that have predominantly survey content, including all client communication, preparation of all advices, certificates, and plans, attendance at meetings, coordination of associated MPA Surveying services, and other consultants affecting the project, and budget control.

Brian has been involved in a number of landmark projects throughout the world including establishing LiDAR and Aerial Photo Control Survey Positions for three 400km proposed gas pipelines from Miles to Gladstone Qld, Sustainable Rivers Audit in the Murray Darling Basin and management and coordination of research and marketing for development opportunities across six shires for the SEQ Regional Plan.

 

STEVE RENOUF, Operations Manager (Mackay)

Steve has over 18 years experience working in road infrastructure and civil engineering surveying. He has worked throughout the Darling Downs, South West Queensland and North West Queensland Regions on projects specialising in pre-design terrain modelling, bridge set out, road construction set out, road construction audits and digital design data management for construction. Steve joined mpas in July 2010 to lead the Mackay team as the Operations Manager. While working at mpas, Steve has brought on projects involving coal port terminal expansions, mobile laser scanning and terrain modelling for predesign road survey and greenfield mine site development.

Steve completed his Associate Degree in Surveying at the University of Southern Queensland, and has since managed the survey operations on various road infrastructure projects with the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Such projects include St. Mary’s Pedestrian Underpass, 8 Mile Intersection Upgrade, Georgina River Bridge, ARRP Bridge Replacement program (Main Roads Southern Qld).

Steve is registered with the Surveyors Board of Queensland (Engineering Endorsement) and is a member of SSSI.

Prior to joining mpas Steve held the position of Senior Surveyor with the Department of Transport and Main Roads in Toowoomba. His key responsibilities included:

  • Manage and motivate the survey function within the Darling Downs region.
  • Mentor junior surveyors by providing support and guidance to trainee/graduate staff under his supervision to develop and maintain workforce capability.
  • Provide professional, technical advice to stakeholders including management and staff relating to surveying and geospatial issues.
  • Develop and deliver the regional survey program.

Steve brings to mpas a commitment to developing and maintaining a strong team of professional surveyors capable of meeting and delivering clients’ expectations.

 

KAREN NORTON, Operations Manager (Gladstone)

As a registered cadastral surveyor with the Surveyors Board of Queensland, Karen has over 16 years of experience in the surveying industry, both in Australia and New Zealand. Karen has had exposure to large and small scale engineering, construction & cadastral projects. Her most recent have been:

  • Contour and detail survey for the D’Agular Highway upgrade
  • A number of sub-division for planned estates
  • Easements & profiles for Powerlink, Arrow Energy and Energex
  • Volume surveys for Sunshine Coast Regional Council
  • High rise construction & building format plans for Reed Property Group

Leading the growing team in Gladstone, Karen joined mpas in August 2011 and looks forward to leading a number of significant projects throughout the region. Karen brings to mpas an organised and professional work ethic.

 

DAN WRIGHT-RAMSAY, Senior Surveyor (Gladstone)

Dan has completed an Associate Diploma in Civil Engineering at the University of Central Queensland and has over 17 years industry experience in construction and mining with 11 years experience as a Civil Surveyor. Dan joined mpas in 2007 after gaining experience in Western Australian where he participated in and supervised several earthwork projects including:

  • Gladstone Airport extension
  • LNG project car park
  • Mt Keith airport upgrade
  • Telfer mine expansions
  • Sally Malay mine development
  • HI Yandi expansion projects
  • Gladstone Airport extension
  • Kirkwood Road stage 2

Dan has 8 years experience in roads, dirt and earthworks, including surveying the construction of a 16km haul road, rail loop and access roads for greenfield mine sites, workshop set out and ancillary set outs for an Iron Ore Mine, near Newman in Western Australia.

Dan brings with him supervisory experience and a practical and professional work ethic which results in very good relationships with clients, contractors and colleagues.

 

STEVE BOXELL, Project Manager – Cadastral & Dimensional Survey

With over 25 years experience in the surveying industry, Steve brings a wealth of experience to mpas. He joined the mpas team in 2006 to lead our Dimensional Control and Cadastral surveying in the Mackay Office.

Steve has worked in many facets of surveying, including major construction, rail, highway, pipeline and port projects associated with the Iron Ore and Gas industries in the North of Western Australia. He has also worked directly with mining companies in open cut operations, plant maintenance, tenement pegging and exploration.

Steve has been actively involved in high-rise building developments in the CBD, bridge construction on the Perth to Mandurah rail project, precise survey for the fabrication of Stackers, Reclaimers, Ship loaders and train car dumpers for handling iron ore and cadastral and civil work on subdivisions.

Steve holds a Science degree in Surveying and Mapping from Curtin University and is also a Licensed Surveyor.

 

MAX PADOVAN, Project Manager

Max was educated at University of Southern Queensland where he received his Associate Diploma of Applied Science (Surveying). He began working in a small private practice after leaving school and has since acquired his Advanced Certificate in Mine Surveying.

Having spent many years in both the mining and construction industries, Max established Max Padovan & Associates in 1988.

In his career as a consultant he has developed specialist skills in the following areas of expertise:

  • Administration and provision of surveying services for large scale mining and construction projects
  • Developed technical skills in the use of survey instruments and further honed precise and accurate surveying techniques
  • Development of planning and co-ordinating skills
  • Substantial exposure to computer systems and their operating software, e.g. Vulcan, Civilcad, Surpac, Moss, AutoCAD, GEO Comp, SDR Mining and Design.

Max’s natural leadership style and preparedness to roll up his sleeves sees him regularly “leading by example”, thereby enabling all participants and stakeholders in a group to focus, contribute, deliver and most importantly, achieve the project objectives.

His ability to communicate with clients in plain English, see the “big picture”, yet maintain an unwavering attention to detail and understanding of what is really required makes him a unique and valuable adviser. Max is the founding shareholder of MPA Surveying and is a principal consultant.
